Plug-in batteries - Innovation must not outpace safety

Industry welcomes innovation but calls for robust safety framework for plug-in battery storage.

While we see a lot of news around plug-in solar technologies and their potential to accelerate consumer participation in the energy transition, we need to stress that plug-in battery storage presents a distinct set of engineering and safety considerations that require careful evaluation.

The Energy Storage Association (UK) are working with industry, industry partners, manufacturers and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to help develop an evidence-based framework for the safe deployment of plug-in battery energy storage systems in UK homes.

While plug-in batteries have the potential to make energy storage more accessible, lower installation barriers and help consumers maximise the value of renewable electricity, we need to avoid over simplifying how a battery connects to a home.

Unlike traditional battery systems, which are typically installed, commissioned and verified by competent professionals, plug-in battery products may be purchased, connected and relocated by consumers without direct professional involvement. As a result, greater responsibility shifts towards product design, testing, conformity assessment, consumer education and consumer protection measures.

Key areas requiring further assessment include compatibility with existing electrical installations, socket and connection safety, thermal runaway management, residual current device (RCD) compatibility, bidirectional power flow, consumer behaviour, incident reporting and long-term lifecycle safety.

John Southern, Director of the Energy Storage Association (UK), said: “Plug-in batteries could play an important role in widening access to energy storage and supporting a more flexible, low-carbon electricity system. However, we must ensure that innovation is matched by robust engineering, clear standards and appropriate consumer safeguards.

Making a battery easier to connect does not make it a simpler engineering problem. The focus must remain on safety, product performance and public confidence.”

The priority for plug-in batteries is to ensure that innovation such as this is introduced safely and responsibly. A coordinated approach involving government, manufacturers, standards bodies, certification organisations, network operators, fire experts and the wider energy sector will be essential to building consumer confidence and supporting the long-term growth of this emerging market.
